Are modern educational systems preparing students for the agentic AI revolution?

The professional landscape is fundamentally transforming how students enter the workforce.

Previously, entry-level roles acted as informal apprenticeships, where new hires performed basic digital tasks like scheduling, data entry, and email drafting in exchange for professional mentorship and experience.

However, autonomous AI agents have removed this corporate “bottom rung” by automating foundational tasks.

This shift creates a major capability gap, as employers now expect graduates to possess high-level analytical and strategic skills on day one.

Ntombizodwa Ngcukana, a 24-year-old student at the University of Cape Town, shares that she leverages AI tools to enhance her comprehension of complex concepts and refine her writing abilities, while remaining firmly committed to using them in an ethical manner.

Ngcukana said: “I am not entirely worried about AI replacing me; I am studying linguistics, specifically IsiXhosa, and the translation industry still highly values human expertise.”

She further remarked that AI often provides only basic information, which is why human knowledge and judgement remain essential.

With rapid technological advancements and the increasing automation of many occupations, Ngcukana shared that she feels a sense of competition with software.

She explained, “This means we need to continuously improve our skills and demonstrate the unique value that humans bring. We need to show that we are capable of doing the job in ways that software cannot fully replicate.”

Sifiso Ndlovu, a 20-year-old student at the University of Witwatersrand, said: “We can all agree that it is a plausible fact that AI is very useful for studying, gathering information, and finding new epistemologies. Moreover, AI is incorporated into some of our lectures for better comprehension.”

For his academic work, Ndlovu noted that he utilises various AI platforms, including Gemini, ChatGPT, and DeepSeek.

Ndlovu said: “In relation to what I am studying(Bachelor of Education), I do think that the knowledge imparted in class will be essential when job hunting.”

He argued that AI is unlikely to replace teachers, citing the significant hurdles the government would face in implementing such programs across schools. However, he cautioned that the use of AI might lead to an “epistemological muddle,” potentially obstructing or restricting the learning process.

According to Dr Sindisiwe Msani, a lecturer in the Division of Languages at the University of Witwatersrand, their teacher training program does not aim to compete with AI. Instead, it centres on mastering qualities that a machine cannot replicate: human connection, pedagogical intuition, and context-driven empathy.

Dr Msani said: “While AI can instantly generate perfect lesson plans but it cannot recognise when a quiet student is struggling, in our program, we build AI-resilient skills by focusing deeply on culturally responsive teaching, adaptive classroom management and the ethical orchestration of digital tools.”

She further remarked that as it is, teachers and lectures are already expected to use AI tools to streamline lesson planning and analyse assessment trends.

“If we completely lock these tools away in the lecture hall, we risk sending students to classrooms unprepared for the real-world operational pace,” said Dr Msani

Furthermore, she stated that the curriculum is being adapted by moving away from rote compliance and administrative repetition, anchoring it instead in advanced human agency, critical digital literacy, and adaptive problem-solving.

Dr Msani additionally pointed out that by integrating these advanced evaluative capabilities into their academic curriculum, noting “we ensure that they graduate not as replaceable content executors but as highly resilient instructional designers and cultural mediators who know exactly how to command digital tools rather than be replaced by them.”
