A student at the University of the Free State (UFS) has died on the Bloemfontein Campus on the same day they were due to graduate, the institution confirmed on Friday.

In a statement, the university said the incident occurred on the afternoon of April 17, 2026, just before the scheduled graduation ceremony.

“It is with deep sadness that the University of the Free State (UFS) shares the news of the passing of one of our students on the Bloemfontein Campus on the afternoon of 17 April 2026,” the university said.

The university confirmed that the student had been expected to graduate later that day.

“The student was due to graduate on the afternoon of 17 April, but passed away on campus before the ceremony,” UFS said.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

“The cause of death is not known at this stage,” the university added.

UFS extended condolences to the bereaved family and the wider student community, saying support structures had been activated.

“The university extends its heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends, and fellow students. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time, and we wish them strength as they come to terms with this loss.”

University officials have not released further details, and the matter remains under review.
