Husband of murdered Bonteheuwel woman abandons bail application amid community outcry
Riedewaan Birch, who stands accused of killing his wife, Shireena Birch abandoned his bid for bail when he appeared in court on Wednesday, in a case that has continued to draw strong community support in Bonteheuwel.
Riedewaan Birch, who was formally charged with murder, told the court he would no longer be proceeding with his bail application. While the exact reasons for his decision remain unclear, it comes amid a sustained and unified call from residents that he should not be released into the community.
He will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 4 June. The development follows last week’s proceedings, when the matter was postponed, sparking frustration among community members who packed the court in solidarity with Shireena Birch’s family.
As previously reported, residents from Bonteheuwel gathered in large numbers, calling for justice for the slain woman and urging the court to deny bail.
On Wednesday, the show of support remained strong, with community leaders and residents again attending court.
Ward councillor Angus McKenzie reiterated his commitment to the family and the broader community, saying they would continue to monitor the case closely.
He said the community can “rest assured that he will once again be present at the court and will continue to stand firm alongside the family until justice is served.”
Speaking on behalf of those who filled the public gallery, McKenzie added that residents ‘remain hopeful that justice will be thoroughly delivered for the late Shireena Birch, for her family and friends, and for every woman affected by abuse and gender based violence’.
Birch’s death has sent shockwaves through Bonteheuwel, with many describing her as a beloved community member. Her killing has also reignited conversations around violence against women and the need for stronger protections and accountability.
Community members previously expressed fears that the accused could intimidate witnesses or cause further trauma if released on bail, these were the concerns that formed part of the backdrop to their vocal opposition to any potential release.
With the bail application now abandoned, residents say they are relieved that the accused will remain behind bars as the legal process unfolds.
The case has been postponed to 4 June, when the accused is expected to return to court as proceedings continue.
