June 30 protests | Cape Town calm but authorities remain on high alert
The City of Cape Town remains relatively quiet on Tuesday, as the June 30 protests loomed.
By 8 am, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis confirmed that there had been no reports of unrest across the metropole.
However, Hill-Lewis said enforcement agencies remain on the ground and monitoring as it “is still early in the day”.
He told IOL, “We have a strategic plan in place not just for today but for the rest of the week. As a city, we welcome the right to protest. But we will not tolerate any lawlessness”.
The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell, said staff have been deployed across the city to monitor for and respond to any incidents linked to the threat of xenophobic violence.
“There are unconfirmed reports of two planned marches in the CBD; however, no gathering applications have been received.
“And no further information is available at this time,” Powell said.
The City confirmed it has also been made aware of incidents where individuals have apparently threatened businesses that employ foreign nationals.
Business owners or anyone threatened in any manner is urged to report these incidents to the SAPS so it can be investigated.
