Life sentence for Durban man who murdered young woman over missing cash
A convicted killer has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Durban Regional Court.
Mapi Mhle Goba, 40, was convicted of the murder of 21-year-old Nondumiso Sbahle Dlamini in September 2025 near the Edwin Swales Highway after pleading guilty.
In his plea, Goba told the court that on September 12, 2025, he met up with the young woman at the traffic lights in the Mayville area, where they arranged to meet before going to the tavern for drinks.
After spending time at the tavern, the duo became intoxicated, and an argument ensued over money that had allegedly gone missing from Goba’s room.
After leaving the tavern, the court heard the duo walked along the gravel footpath next to the bushes along the Edwin Swales Highway.
Although intoxicated, Goba admitted that he was fully aware of his actions and surroundings.
As the duo continued to argue, Goba said the young woman shouted at him and, in turn, he stabbed her in the neck, and she fell into the bushes.
Goba, who failed to report the incident to the police, only disclosed the location of the body after he was arrested. He conducted a pointing out that led police to the victim’s decomposed body.
In aggravation of sentence, State Advocate Cheryl Pillay presented medical evidence, as well as a victim impact statement compiled by the victim’s father and facilitated by the Court Preparation Officer Nondumiso Nyembe.
In his statement, the grieving father told the court that his daughter’s death had devastated him, and caused him to become ill.
He further told the court he was forced to relocate because he lived near Goba and could no longer bear seeing his house.
In addition to his life sentence, the court further declared Goba unfit to possess a firearm.
The KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said it welcomed the sentencing.
“The NPA remains steadfast in its commitment to securing justice for victims of crime and their families. Working together with our partners in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, we will continue to pursue justice without fear, favour or prejudice, while ensuring that perpetrators of violent crime are held accountable for their actions,” Ramkisson-Kara said.
