Madlanga Commission has ruled that Witness J will testify behind closed doors, after citing safety concerns.
Commission chair, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, delivered at 9:30am in Pretoria.
Madlanga said “the testimony will be heard in-camera”.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels said that if the application is granted, the testimony will take place without the presence of the media or the public.
A redacted transcript of the proceedings will be released to journalists by Monday.
The application comes as the commission continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the theft of a 541kg drug consignment from Hawks offices in Port Shepstone in 2021.
On Wednesday, suspended Hawks KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) provincial commander Brigadier Campbell Nyuswa denied any involvement in the disappearance of the drugs.
Nyuswa authorised the storage of the consignment at the Port Shepstone facility but told the commission he had no role in the theft.
He also challenged claims that criminals gained access to the drugs by grinding through the strong-room safe.
“I was shocked that the safe had been breached, but more than that I was sceptical that it had been breached by grinding the door,” Nyuswa testified.
The commission is expected to continue hearing evidence as it seeks to establish how one of the country’s largest drug consignments vanished from a secure police facility and who may have been responsible.
