National Media Group (NMG) on Friday announced key leadership appointments and licensing of trusted, major South African newspaper titles.

The Group announced the appointment of Mr Mzi Malunga as Chairman of the Board, Ms Melanie Peters as Chief Executive Officer, and Mr Wesley Chetty as Head of Strategy.

The Group said in a statement: “These appointments mark a significant milestone in the establishment of National Media Group as a dynamic new force in South Africa’s media landscape. Further executive appointments will be announced in due course as the Group continues to build a world-class leadership team to drive its long-term growth strategy.

“In addition, National Media Group is pleased to confirm that it has applied for and received the licensing rights from Sagarmatha Technologies for a portfolio of iconic South African newspaper titles, including:

  • Daily News

  • Sunday Tribune
  • Independent on Saturday

  • Cape Times
  • Cape Argus
  • Daily Voice
  • Weekend Argus
  • The Star

“These titles, together with the forthcoming launch of The National, NMG’s new premium national news brand, will form part of a comprehensive portfolio spanning daily, weekend, regional, and national publications.

“National Media Group has been overwhelmed by the volume and quality of applications received from journalists, editors, production specialists, digital professionals, and commercial staff who wish to be part of this exciting new chapter in South African media.

“The Group expects the project to support the employment of approximately 1,500 people across editorial, printing, production, distribution, technology, and commercial operations, while also creating more than 200 additional new jobs as part of its expansion and investment programme.

“Importantly, there will be absolutely no disruption to the publication of any newspaper title. Every newspaper will continue to publish as normal, with readers continuing to enjoy the trusted journalism they have relied upon for generations,” NMG said.

Mzi Malunga, Chairman of the Board of National Media Group, said:

“National Media Group is committed to ensuring that quality journalism continues to be served to communities across the country. We are building a sustainable media business that embraces both the trusted traditions of the print platform and opportunities presented by the digital age.”

Melanie Peters, Chief Executive Officer of National Media Group, added: “This is a defining moment for South African media. Our immediate priority is strengthening our regional titles, expanding digital audiences, investing in talented journalists, and launching innovative products that reflect the needs of modern South African audiences. We are honoured by the extraordinary interest shown by media professionals who want to join National Media Group.”

National Media Group believes that a strong, independent, and innovative news media sector is essential to South Africa’s democracy and economic development. The Group is committed to investing in journalism, technology, printing infrastructure, and people to ensure that its publications remain relevant, accessible, and sustainable for future generations.
