eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that a network fault is disrupting critical communication services, including the toll‑free number and emergency lines, leaving residents potentially unable to reach emergency teams through usual channels.
The city issued the announcement in a media release on January 5, 2026.
“eThekwini Municipality advises residents that the city is currently experiencing a network fault that has disrupted critical communication services, including the toll‑free number and emergency lines,” the statement read.
“As a result, residents may be unable to reach emergency teams through the usual channels.”
The municipality said it understands the urgency of these essential services and assured the public that technical teams are working around the clock to identify and resolve the issue.
“All available resources have been deployed to restore full functionality as quickly as possible,” it added.

“The municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused and appeals for patience and understanding as technicians work diligently to stabilise the system,” the statement said.
“The municipality remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted access to essential services and will provide regular updates through municipal platforms.”
