Capital City giants Silver Strikers’ quest to close the gap in the TNM Super League faces a stern test as they meet Chitipa United at Karonga Stadium this afternoon.
This will be Silver’s second consecutive match at the venue, having shared the spoils with Karonga United following a goal-less draw on Sunday.
The two sides are separated by three points on the log table, with Silver on third position with 47 points from 26 matches whereas Chitipa are fourth with 44 points from the same number of matches.
At this stage, Silver have slim hopes of winning their first Super League title in 10 years, as they trail leaders FCB Nyasa Bullets and second-placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers by six points.
Probably, both teams will be looking to cement their position with few matches left to wind up the season.
The two teams shared the spoils in the first leg following a goal-less draw at Civil Stadium.
“Playing Chitipa at their home ground is not an easy game but we play to win every game,” Silver Coach Pieter de Jongh told journalists in Lilongwe on Thursday.
A defeat for Silver in today’s match will dampen their slim hopes of winning the league title this season. For Chitipa, they might be satisfied with their performance.
The team’s coach Macdonald Mtetemera said his charges are ready for Silver.
“It will be a difficult match against Silver. We know they come hard on us, but we will try to protect our home record,” he said.
Chitipa have not lost a match at home in the league this season.
Elsewhere, Red Lions will host Ekwendeni Hammers at Balaka Stadium.
The Zomba-based soldiers are stuck in the relegation zone with 25 points from 27 matches whereas the Hammers are 13th with 30 points from 26 matches.
