LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-With five months to go before the country hosts Region 5 Youth Games, Lilongwe 2022 Limited local organizing committee on Tuesday dated sports journalists in the central region with an orientation.

The aim of the orientation was to allow the media their role in games promotion, to find the way forward and work plan on the challenges journalists face in accessing information.

Chairman for Region 5 Youth games Lilongwe 2022 Limited Local Organizing Committee, Dennis Mombera said the media is very important and key to the games ahead, as they are responsible for disseminating accurate information.

He added they want the general public to get right information about the games hence the media orientation.

“We want to partner with the media to create one team that is going to drive the narrative. We want the media to capture the impact these games have to Malawi as the host and SADC region at large”, Mombera said.

Speaking after the orientation, Patrick Simango, one of the veteran sports journalists from Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC) described the orientation as very vital saying the region 5 youth games slated for December is a very big event hence a need for people to be fed with proper information about the games.

“It’s a major tournament, where different sports codes apart from Netball and Football which are well known by many, hence the meeting will enable us the journalists to come up with programs that will help people out there to know some sports codes, like Lawn Tennis,Swimming,Gymnastics.

Let me thank the committee for organising such a meeting today and my appeal is that they should be doing this so often so that we journalists sail in the same boat with the organisers. Other event organizers should emulate what Region 5 Youth Committee has done and this will definitely empower us”, says Simango.

The orientation that took place at Bingu National Stadium attracted media over 20 media houses from print, electronic and online.

African Union Region 5 Youth games are expected to take place in the country from 2nd to 11th December, 2022 and 10 member countries, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, e-Swatini, Angola, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia are anticipated to participate.
