Woman dies after suspected generator explosion at Eastern Cape cafe

A 62-year-old woman died following a suspected generator explosion at a local coffee shop on Marine Drive in Gqeberha on Monday.

“It is alleged that, just before 1pm, the deceased, identified as Jo-Ann Pieters, sustained severe burn wounds when a generator reportedly exploded.

“She was transported to a private hospital by ambulance,” said South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

She was admitted to a trauma unit. Despite medical intervention, she succumbed to her injuries shortly afterwards.

“No foul play is suspected at this stage. Police have opened an inquest docket, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.”
