LAGOS, July 28 (Xinhua) — Cholera has killed at least 526 people in Nigeria since the beginning of 2021, according to data by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

As of July 22, about 22,130 suspected cases of the life-threatening and water-borne disease had been reported in 18 states and the Federal Capital Territory, the NCDC said in a latest report reaching Xinhua on Wednesday.

Of the reported cases, 28 percent are aged between 5 and 14 years old, the NCDC said, adding there has been a decrease in the number of new cases in recent days.

The agency said national rapid response teams have been deployed to support the response in affected states.

Cholera is a highly virulent disease characterized in its most severe form by a sudden onset of acute watery diarrhea. Enditem
